Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Outpatient treatment is addiction care that allows you to live at home while attending sessions during the day or evening. It is the right level of care for some people from the start — and the natural next step for almost everyone after residential treatment.

What to Expect

Outpatient comes in several intensities: standard outpatient (1-3 sessions per week), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP, 9+ hours per week), and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP, 20+ hours per week). The right intensity depends on the severity of the substance use, co-occurring conditions, and how stable the home environment is.

Our Approach

BetterChoice is primarily a residential program, but we coordinate closely with high-quality outpatient providers across the Las Vegas valley and beyond. Every client who discharges from our residential program has an outpatient handoff in place — usually with a specific provider already booked for the first week.

Why BetterChoice?

  • • Medical monitoring during detox
  • • Private luxury estate setting
  • • Evidence-based therapeutic protocols
  • • Master's level clinical staff
  • • Joint Commission accredited

Frequently Asked Questions

The full continuum: Partial Hospitalization (PHP, 5–6 hours/day), Intensive Outpatient (IOP, 3 hours/day, often evenings), and standard outpatient (1–2 individual sessions per week). We coordinate referrals to vetted programs across Las Vegas and nationally.

For IOP and standard outpatient, yes — most programs offer evening schedules to accommodate work. PHP usually requires daytime availability or significant work flexibility. We will help you choose the right intensity based on your obligations.

Yes — outpatient treatment is generally well-covered by commercial PPO insurance plans, often with lower copays than residential care. Verification takes a few minutes — call (725) 550-5655.

It depends. Outpatient works well for mild-to-moderate addictions with stable home environments, as a step-down after residential, or for long-term maintenance. Inpatient is needed for severe addictions, co-occurring mental health conditions, unsafe home environments, or failed prior outpatient attempts.

Relapse is part of many recovery stories — what matters is the response. Most outpatient programs have a clear plan: increased session frequency, reassessment of medication, possible step-up to PHP or residential, family involvement. The worst response is to disappear from the program. Tell your therapist immediately.

PHP is typically 2–4 weeks, IOP 8–12 weeks, standard outpatient open-ended (some patients continue for years). The total continuum (PHP → IOP → OP) often spans 6–12 months post-residential.

Yes. Many patients return to outpatient periodically over years — for life transitions, increased stress, signs of emotional relapse, or simply as ongoing recovery maintenance. There is no expiration on outpatient treatment.

Quick Answer

Outpatient addiction treatment allows patients to live at home (or in sober living) while attending structured therapy and group sessions multiple days per week. The continuum includes Partial Hospitalization (PHP, 5–6 hours/day), Intensive Outpatient (IOP, 3 hours/day, often evenings), and standard outpatient (1–2 sessions/week). BetterChoice Treatment Center coordinates outpatient handoff for residential patients across Las Vegas. Call (725) 550-5655.

Levels of Outpatient Care

Outpatient care exists on a spectrum of intensity:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) — typically 5–6 hours per day, 5 days per week. Closest in intensity to inpatient. Often used as step-down from residential.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) — typically 3 hours per day, 3–5 days per week (often evenings to accommodate work). Used as step-down from PHP or residential.
  • Standard Outpatient (OP) — 1–2 individual therapy sessions per week, often combined with weekly group. Long-term recovery support.

Most patients move through this continuum: residential → PHP → IOP → OP → independent recovery with peer support.

Why Outpatient Matters After Residential

Residential treatment builds the foundation. Outpatient continues the work in the real world — where the actual challenges of recovery happen. Patients who continue outpatient after residential have significantly better long-term outcomes than those who do not.

A typical post-residential schedule:

  • Weeks 1–4 post-discharge — PHP or IOP, plus 12-step/SMART meetings, plus outpatient psychiatric appointments if applicable
  • Months 2–6 — IOP tapering to standard OP, ongoing meetings, sponsor work, sober living if needed
  • Months 6–12+ — standard OP (1–2x per week), regular meetings, alumni connection, MAT continuation if applicable
  • Year 2+ — periodic check-ins, ongoing meetings, independent recovery practice

Outpatient vs Inpatient — How to Choose

Inpatient (residential) is the right level of care for:

  • Severe addictions requiring medical detox
  • Significant co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Unsafe or actively triggering home environments
  • Failed prior outpatient attempts
  • Patients who need to fully step out of their environment to recover

Outpatient is the right level of care for:

  • Step-down after residential treatment
  • Mild to moderate addictions with stable home environments
  • Patients with strong family support and low-trigger environments
  • Long-term recovery maintenance
  • Patients whose work or family obligations make residential impossible (though residential is often more achievable than people initially believe)

We help every patient find the right level of care honestly.

What a Typical IOP Day Looks Like

Most IOPs run 3 hours per session, 3 evenings per week (typical schedule: 6:00–9:00 PM Monday/Wednesday/Friday). A typical session includes:

  • 15-minute check-in and goal review
  • 60-minute process group focused on recovery skills, relapse prevention, or specific topics (CBT, DBT, mindfulness)
  • 15-minute break
  • 60-minute psychoeducation or skills group
  • 30-minute closing — homework assignments, weekend planning, accountability

Some IOPs include weekly individual therapy sessions; others coordinate with the patient external therapist. Random drug testing is typically required.

Coordinating Outpatient at BetterChoice

We can help identify outpatient programs in Las Vegas and in your home area and coordinate referrals with your consent. Before discharge, your case manager:

  1. Identifies the right level of outpatient care for your situation
  2. Recommends specific programs based on location, schedule, and clinical fit
  3. Schedules your first appointment so there is no gap between discharge and first outpatient session
  4. Coordinates psychiatric medication continuation
  5. Connects you with local AA/NA/SMART/Refuge meetings
  6. Arranges sober living placement when appropriate

See our Las Vegas outpatient treatment page for local options.

Many people use commercial insurance toward treatment when their plan includes eligible benefits. Admissions can check benefits with carriers such as Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Magellan and TRICARE; network status and any single case agreement depend on the specific plan and are not guaranteed. To learn what your plan may cover, verify your benefits with no obligation to admit. Ask admissions about private-pay rates and any payment arrangements currently offered.
