Financing & Payment Options

Cost should never be the reason someone does not get help. Most patients at BetterChoice use insurance to cover most or all of their treatment, but we also work directly with families on self-pay, in-house payment plans, HSA and FSA accounts, and family contributions. We do not work with third-party lenders or healthcare financing companies — every payment plan is between you and BetterChoice.

Insurance

The fastest path to figuring out what you will actually pay is a free, confidential benefits verification. Call (725) 550-5655 or use our insurance verification form and we will contact your carrier on your behalf. Within a few hours we can usually tell you:

  • Whether your plan covers medical detox and residential treatment at our facility
  • Your deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum
  • How many days of inpatient care your plan typically authorizes
  • Whether prior authorization is required and how long it takes
  • What your estimated out-of-pocket cost will be

We are in-network or work with the following major carriers:

If your carrier is not on this list, call us anyway — we work with most major plans on a single-case agreement basis when needed.

Self-Pay

For patients without insurance, with high-deductible plans, or who prefer to keep treatment off their insurance record entirely, we offer all-inclusive self-pay rates. Self-pay covers your room, meals, medical care, all therapy and group sessions, medications administered on site, and standard amenities. There are no surprise bills.

Self-pay rates vary based on your length of stay and level of care (medical detox vs. residential vs. step-down). Call (725) 550-5655 for current pricing.

In-House Payment Plans

We offer payment plans directly through BetterChoice — no banks, no third-party lenders, no credit applications. The agreement is between you and us, and the terms are designed around what your family can actually afford. Common structures we have set up for families:

  • Down payment + monthly installments for the balance, typically over 6, 12, or 24 months
  • Graduated payments that start lower and step up over time as a patient returns to work
  • Family contribution plans that split payment across multiple family members
  • Post-treatment payment plans that begin after discharge so a patient can focus fully on recovery during their stay

Payment plan terms are agreed on during admissions based on your specific situation. There is no penalty for paying off early, no interest piled on, and no third party calling you about late payments — if life changes, you talk to our admissions team directly.

HSA, FSA, and HRA Accounts

Addiction treatment is a qualified medical expense under the IRS code, which means you can use:

  • Health Savings Account (HSA) funds tax-free
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds tax-free
  • Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) if your employer offers one

Most patients can use these accounts for deductibles, coinsurance, copays, and self-pay charges. Save your itemized statements — we provide them at discharge.

Out-of-Pocket Maximums

Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans have a yearly out-of-pocket maximum that caps what you will pay in a calendar year. Once you hit it, your insurance covers 100% of in-network care for the rest of the year. For 2025, the federal cap is $9,200 for an individual and $18,400 for a family — many plans set lower caps. If you have already paid significant medical expenses this year, you may already be at or near your cap, which can mean treatment costs you very little out of pocket. Ask us to check during benefits verification.

Mental Health Parity

Federal law requires that insurance plans cover mental health and substance use treatment on the same terms as physical health treatment. If your plan covers a hospital stay for surgery, it cannot impose stricter limits on a hospital stay for addiction. If your insurance company is denying coverage that should be available under parity rules, talk to us — we have appealed and won many of these denials.

Scholarships & Need-Based Assistance

We reserve a limited number of partial scholarships each quarter for patients who genuinely cannot afford treatment any other way. Scholarship review considers your financial situation, clinical need, and willingness to commit to the full course of treatment. Call admissions to inquire — these are not advertised because demand exceeds supply, but they are real.

What If I Can't Afford It?

Even with all of these options, treatment is not cheap, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you are facing a true affordability barrier and we cannot make our program work, we will help you find an option that can — including state-funded programs, faith-based recovery communities, Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers, and federally funded community treatment centers.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) operates a free, confidential national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) that can refer you to treatment in your area regardless of ability to pay.
